Living well with dementia: a National Dementia Strategy

Published: 3 February 2009

This strategy provides a strategic framework within which local services can:

  • deliver quality improvements to dementia services and address health inequalities relating to dementia;
  • provide advice and guidance and support for health and social care commissioners and providers in the planning, development and monitoring of services; and
  • provide a guide to the content of high-quality services for dementia.

  1. I was amazed to learn about the social and economic cost of dementia as quoted in the Equality Impact Assessment

    • numbers of people with dementia are set to rise to over 750,000 in England by 2020
    • the direct costs of dementia to the NHS are approximately £3.3 billion per year
    • the overall annual economic burden is estimated to be £14.3 billion per year, or £25,391 per head
    • unpaid carers save a cost of £5.2 billion a year
